How Medicare Rebates Work.
1. Speak with your GP
Book an appointment with your GP and ask about a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). If appropriate, your GP can prepare a referral and treatment plan for psychology sessions.
2. Book your appointment
You can book online at any time. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral, you can send it through before your first appointment or bring it with you on the day.
3. Receive your rebate
Medicare currently provides a rebate of $149.05 per eligible session with a Clinical Psychologist. Rebates are available for up to 10 sessions per calendar year, with a review from your GP along the way.
Private Health.
Some private health funds may provide rebates for both individual and couples therapy. As rebates vary between insurers and levels of cover, it's best to contact your health fund directly to check your entitlements.
Please note that Medicare and private health rebates cannot be claimed for the same individual therapy session.
